About

What is PlantChapters?

PlantChapters brings together, trains and supports teams of volunteers to create tools and campaigns for change in their local institutions – starting with councils. We call on councils to lead with climate action on food by switching to 100% plant-based catering for internal meetings and events.

Why target councils?

Councils are the most accessible form of democracy for regular people – they are duty bound to work with residents. They have climate targets that plant-based catering helps achieve by reducing institutional carbon emissions by up to 25%. By changing what councillors eat, we influence the internal culture of the council, which spills out into the community.

Why 100% plant-based?

We can win 100% by asking for 100%! By pushing for complete plant-based transitions, we reframe the conversation from “meat reduction” to food system transformation – which is what the climate crisis actually demands. This approach aligns with community values, as 79% of Australians already go meat-free at least weekly and 12.1% follow mostly plant-based diets.

What’s a chapter?

A chapter is a local team of volunteers who campaign for their specific council to adopt plant-based catering. PlantChapters provides training, resources and ongoing support to help chapters run effective campaigns in their area.

Our approach

We’re learning from international success – 13 UK councils have adopted plant-based policies with 40+ volunteer teams driving change. Australia’s Darebin Council has already endorsed the Plant Based Treaty, proving Australian councils are ready for this leadership.
